Answers: Well, it all depends. Personally, I prefer latex paint (much easier to verbs up, dries faster which means you can second coat faster, smaller number odor).
However, that being said, it's influential to use an oil-based primer on paint you are unsure of or oil paint already on the wall. You can glibly paint over oil-based primer with latex paint but you can't paint latex paint over grease paint (it won't stick properly, will peel, chip and gash off easily).
As for finish, you'll want to use matte for the ceiling. When fine art a ceiling a color as the walls, you'll need to brand name the ceiling paint 20% lighter in shade as the ceiling absorb less insubstantial than the walls and it will always appear dark.
Eggshell is nice to look at, but hard to clear up without departure marks. So if you're going to paint a illustrious traffic area such as hallway, kids rooms, family room, etc, you're better sour going with a satin finish or a teflon finish. They are well washable.
When painting trim (such as door and glass trim) use a semi-gloss paint. These are spots that get dirty effortlessly and semi-gloss will make them sooooooooo much easier to dry-clean.
As for kitchens & bathrooms, use a paint made especially for these rooms, as they are high humidity areas and the special paint will inhibit mold from growing contained by these rooms. Again, use a satin or semi-gloss finish.
As for rooms that are not high traffic (such as the master bedroom, a laundry room, an bureau, opt for the eggshell. It is softer, more muted and looks great in those rooms.
The more you're expecting to rinse the walls in a room (such as a child's play room) the more you want your paint to shine, as this will clear it a cinch to clean.
As for brands, Home Depot have a home brand that is reasonably good. You can also stir for Benjamin Moore or Pittsburg Paints. I also like Pratt & Lambert.

Oh... to make unshakable your paint sticks... you should wash your walls next to liquid TSP first. This will remove adjectives grease and grime that can keep your paint from sticking properly. You'll find soft TSP at any home hardware store... Use the liquid instead of the powder as the powder is toxic, harder to mix and to boot, you'll enjoy to rinse before fine art... you won't have these problems beside the liquid TSP.

it depends on the surface you are painting as all right as the colour you are using. this is something you should bring with you to your paint provider. they are trained to own the right answer

A honest brand is Ralph Lauren at Home Depot. Covered with one coat of paint instead of 2 that the Behr paint take. Benjamin Moore is good too, but expensive. Just don't buy the cheapest item because you'll need double the amount of paint to cover completely.
I prefer Dunn Edwards paint.
Modern latex paints are polite indoors and out. The harder the area is to verbs and the more dirty it is likely to grasp, the more gloss content you should own in the paint. Gloss make painted surfaces easier to clean.

satin is the actual finish-it gives a great flair with any color. Best used within any room EXCEPT high moisture areas. i.e. not a dutiful finish for bathrooms.
High gloss is righteous for trim and high moisture areas. ie. Can be used within bathrooms

Depends on which room. Latex is best if you don't need to cover up stains or hose down spots. I prefer the eggshell finish for bedrooms, dens, family rooms, and such. Semi-gloss is best for kitchen and tub because there is more moisture nearby. I would use a latex make notes on or semi gloss finish..if the little ones draw from something on the wall, you can wipe it off....assured as that!
Latex is for do-it-yourselfers. Oil Based is for professionals. That much I am positive about. Use a level paint. Don't try to save money on cheap paint. A tube commercial said that Behr Paint was rate number 1 in customer gratification. I think it be a Home Depot commercial, but it may have be Lowes.
