where can I get a guidline cost for dormer windows in a loft?
Answers:
OK, I know this because I have recently done just the same, we've installed Velux windows and dormers lately. The best thing to do is to look in your Yellow Pages or wherever and find a selection of local builders. Contact them asking if they can come and give you a quote. Don't worry if you don't end up using any of them, they'll understand that you're going to go with the most competitive quote and maybe none of them at all but they'll all be keen to get your business.
They'll also be able to offer some words of advice, or consider issues that maybe you hadn't thought of. It might also be helpful to go to the local builder's merchants and find out the cost of your main materials - just ask at the counter - they're usually quite helpful if you explain why you want to know. If you're a man and not too confident send a woman in to ask - we can feign ignorance and they'll write it all down for us! (Travis Perkins supply Velux windows to builders, which is how I found out the cost price of ours to compare with my quotes.) Don't rely on feminine wiles when the builders are looking at the job though, they may think she's a soft touch and charge more!
They might give a quote there and then or spend a few days preparing and sending one. Also, have you found out whether you need planning permission or not? If so you will need to take it into account and include the fee in your budget.
Good luck and have fun! (Adding a window to a room, by the way, is really rewarding if you suddenly acquire a magnificent view and a much lighter room...)
