How do i get rid of a musty smell in my older home??

My home was built in the late 1920's and we are pulling up carpeting to re-do hardwood floors. I'm now noticing an "older house" smell. Will things get better after we sand and stain, etc??

The house i live in was the same why except i was living somewhere else so i had time to figure things out and let me tell you it was a sure task.
I'm not going into what i need that never work just straight to the punch line.
Ever thing that's painted re-paint and (caulk tight) where ( lets say not saying you have this is only a example i call my house insect free because no insect has no where to go.

Use Kitz stain primer first its oil pigmented locks in stain & odor.
Think about it i love this to preserved figs and others, Jarred (veg) well back in the day woman live in the kicthen. Smelled good while it was cooking but all the flavors.
Have mixed togehter and into the walls.

After you Kitz which is sold at Wal-Mart and owed by Sherwin Williams Paint Store and re-paint with a finish paint (color) of you likeing and its gone

Yes it will get better. Also it doesn't hurt to give the walls a good scrub down. Now it won't go completely away so you'll have to use air fresheners and things of that sort to make it pleasant smelling all the time. Good Luck!
I"m sure ripping out the carpet is just stirrng the smell up. Once you sand the floors and get stians and sealers on them, it should go away.

If it doesn't... "musty" is usually a sign of moisture. Try putting some Damp-Rid in a few places around your home, and check them in 1 month. The ones w/ the most water in them is the place w/ the most moisture probelm. A central A/C ought to remove the excess moisture *if* the unit is not too big for the house, and cools it and cuts off before getting the moisture out. If you only have window A/C units, consider a dehumidifier.
If there is wall paper in the room most likely the smell is coming from the old paper pull it out and allow the room to dry out for sometime before repapering put fans in open the rooms up and circulate the air
