An alternative to tile and fairly handsome is slate, which comes in assorted colors and sizes, doesn't fade, chip, crack or stain and lasts a lifetime. If you've laid down tile, you can lay down slate. The solitary difference is mortar in lieu of mastic. Plus you use the mortar as the grout and it can be coloured.
I'm glad you are not going pay for with tile over wood.....or you will enjoy major breaking problems latter...unless you put down the Hardee board ( which is a concrete based panel )..later you can use tile. I'm not sure want type of wood you are thinking about using explicitly 24X24..unless it's plywood sheets. If it's that...you are looking at problems later beside that coming apart if it gets drizzly. Best thing for you to do is dance to one of those free ' How To ' classes at Lowes or Home Depot. They will show you what is best and how to do it...and DO IT RIGHT ! the first time.
