How do you wire a 220 volt outlet for window air conditioner?

Hire an electrician if you don't feel comfortable with the job. Save your own life.

You will need cable that has a red and a black wire as well as the bare copper ground wire. The size will depend on the current you need. The store should have a chart stating the current ratting for each size of cable. You will also need a double breaker for your breaker box. Connect the black to one breaker, the red to the other. The ground wire goes to the grounding bus in the panel. Make sure all connections are tight and not touching each other. The socket is pretty much the same, red to one connection, black to the other and ground to the ground connection. It does not matter which is which with the red and black wires.

Depending on the amperage needed dictates the wire size...but a 12/3 with ground should work...this cable has 4 wires in it...white (neutral), red (Hot), balck (Hot) and green (ground)...the plug has 1 round hole (for the neutral ) 2 flat (I shape) (for the red & black wire and a green screw for the ground.......hope this helps
this will involve a new dual breaker in your electrical panel, run a new wire from the panel to the window location, install the outlet for the AC unit, patch all the holes you make getting the wire there.
if this sounds like to much work, call an electrician or handyman
if not, let me know
my questions are, how many amps does the AC unit require?
is there room for additional breakers in the panel?
I could sit here and explain to you how to do this, but without knowing what size service is coming into your home and not knowing if your panel box will handle a 220 line. I would be guessing, and guessing when it comes to electricity is dangerous business. Hire a registered electrician is the best advise I can give. Be safe, not sorry! let the pro's handle it.
