levelling a floor?

whats the best way to level a concrete floor ready for laminate. help!!

Answers:
Yup, use self levelling compound, you can buy it in bags that you mix with water in a bucket, or there are tubs of ready mix available. Ideal for levelling small differences in level say upto 10mm, any more than that you really need a new screed laid.

Other answers:
Use self leveling compund. Ready made, pour on, skim over, let set - hey presto. I know it's not that easy but that's it in a nutshell.

Lay down a nice runny mix of concrete, when it dries it'll be smooth as ice!
use level
yes use self levelling compound
Comercial contracts would use a concrete shaver. It actually grinds the concrete to get rid of rough spots.

For the average Joe, you can use mortor. It is a quick drying concrete that will fill in low areas, cracks, or even out rough spots in your concrete. You can buy this stuff at any hardware store, like HomeDepot. Although it is quick dry, you should wait overnight before putting on your laminate flooring.
"This Old House" now known as "This New House" on tv takes questions via email. Seems to me that they level a floor with long wood boards and a leveler (looks like a thermometer but the liquid in it tells when the flat item is level).
You did'nt say what type of floor exists at present. Assume a sub-floor of rough concrete. Lay down a smooth batton on one end and get it level. , assume floor is 12x10, measure out 3 feet, lay down another batton parallel with first one. Carefully fill with fine sand & cement mixture and level-off with a smooth board, allow to set overnite. Remove both boards VERY carefully, continue over 3 days. Contrary to what someone said in the answers. DON'T lay down laminate for 3 MONTHS! or it will warp
use a self leveling underlayment.

make sure the product you use is NOT for a wearing surface.....adhesive won't stick to it.

Use Dayton Superior's Level Layer One, or United Products Self Leveling Underlayment.
Use a self levelor, its concrete and will work just fine. But there are steps to follow first.
1- use TSP, clean the area with TSP(use gloves and scrub brush) let dry.
2- use a primer(lextex) let dry aprox 1hr
3- mix levelor pour into low spot and let the mixture do all the work it will spread itself. let dry for 8-9hrs for light foot trafic. 24hrs to full cure.
4- use a vapour barrier underlay for your laminate. Foam side down.
5- install laminate

The best thing to do is attend a lamanite seminar from Home Depot if you have one in your area. Its free and they will walk you through step by step. Its a hands on seminar so you can use the laminate from the Depot and make mistakes with theirs rather than yours( remember they just write it off, you cant)
