Where is the proper placement for a garage GFI?

Does the GFI need to be at the breaker or at the garage recepticle. I plan on running 2 - 20amp 12/2 lines respectively on it's
own breaker. One line lights, one recepticles.
Thanks

Answers:    All 120 volt receptacle outlets surrounded by a garage must be GFCI protected in the current 2008 National Electric Code. There are a couple different ways to do this.

1. Install a GFCI circuit breaker for each circuit surrounded by the garage having receptacle outlets.
2. Install a GFCI receptacle at the first receptacle outlet location and connect adjectives downstream receptacles to the nouns side of that receptacle.

Lights are not required to be GFCI protected. But they can be so protected if you wish.
In my garage every one be on a breaker for the garage, and all at 48 inches above floor horizontal. Certainly you can split the recepts. from the lights, and 20 AMP will allow you enough to separately power TOYS, lacking disturbing the lighting quality, but it might be a bit of overkill.

Certainly we can't assume your intent, IE: finish the garage as another room/ a workshop/ High draw appliances, etc.

Make sure that is 12/2 w/ground and its is a personal choice but I prefer the GFI at the outlet first consequently possibly also at the breaker especially if you have damp hobbies. If at the outlet then you just trip the effected component and not everything on the circuit. Be sure to theory test the switch once in a while and replace if needed. Make sure the outlet is rate 20 amps.
