sand it and coat it with polyurethane or just wax it like a surf board
but getting it powder coated would work best
The best way is to buff the galvanising, and because of the dimensions it's mainly gonna be by hand but concentrate on the areas where your hands contact. Don't use anything too abrasive try starting out with silicon carbide paper about 400 grit and then finer grades later but be prepared for lots of work.
what you are looking for is called emery clothe.no more than you will need you should go to a machine shop and ask. turn on a little charm and they will probable give it to you.
you could use steel wool to smooth out the rough areas start with a large corse wool and work you way into the finer ones what would better is to take the pole to metal fabricator and have it hot dipped that will give the chrome look and will last forever. Good luck! reaper out...........
by the time you sand off professionally time and money will exceed the value some aluminium or any pipe from hardware store.
GOOD old pepsi cola will eat off the galvanization...or some battery acid (free at some garages) tell them your plight and you are going to be in the olympics so would they donate some acid...should work for you. Then all you need to do is steel wool and baby powder the pole...ok?
