how to put in a window ac without a ledge?

We have bad windows and no ledges so we put our ac unit in the window but b4 we do , make sure the caseing of the ac unit is screwed in the window and we put the unit on a pole on the outside of the house so it has some where to hold on to, then we also put screws in the top of the window after it is in. hope this works, we have 135 year old wood windows and it works for us and has for 14 years, lol gl

There are a/c window unit's available with accordion style adjusters on each side, this gives a better fit and works with more window sizes.
I've seen these work without any sill's or fasteners.

you can get concreat nails and hang it at a 45 degree angle with a chain. allow 2 inch drop on ac to allow condensation to drip. Works great without a window ledge
Prior to installing the unit, build a L shaped shelf and support the unit by attaching the lower half of the L to the interior wall..... just make certain that the shelf is constructed in a sturdy fashion, using strong L brackets would work. A consideration would be to build a bookshelf, window height and attach the shelf the Unit will go onto. The weight of the case should hold it, but I'd reinforce it w/fasteners into the interior wall.
