Would love to know the answer to this; we have like peas in a pod problem; Have to put very filmy netting (called tulle) around the cartrige filter to keep out sediment, but still it is a spasm to pull up the hose, pinch the filter cartridge out and replace the tulle every couple of weeks Will be keeping an eye on this put somebody through the mill..
Back wash filter use few grades of sand and gravel for filtration.
1)There must be a expansion volume for backwash ,least possible you wash away the sand during backwash
2)perforated nozzle to prevent sand/gravel to flow out of the filtrate.

a) bottom seam : gravel
b)middle layer:course sand
c)top deposit:fine sand
c)drain valve,inlet spigot,backwash valve,service spout n by pass spout
d)optional :pressure gauges .2 monitor pressure drops.Inlet and discharge

Piece of cake if you know how or info from book on filtration
There are strainers designed to fit onto the cease or the pipe.

They are quite recurrently combined with a foot tap.

Look for a sand-point.

Good Luck.
