Sewing Machine opinion needed for a pupil?
The first project I want to deal with is making curtains for my apartment. odd sized window have made for a big headache contained by looing to buy them. I also think i might want to joggle in making clothing for myself here and within.
I have looked-for a sewing machine for years anyway :)
What are the make and models experienced 'sewers' would recommend for a beginner looking to do these kind of projects?
Answers: I recommend you look at overstock.com. I would look at getting a simple computerized machine that self-threads (one that comes next to 20 built in stitches which include a button hole maker). I found a refurbished one on overstock and it come with a packet of extra stuff you'll have need of for your machine as your skills credit as well as a few keep things and extra needles, a book and a dvd even. You don't need one that embroider (for some reason the latest ones tout that they even embroider - but really are you going to go embroidery crazy?) And refurbished is roughly brand new.(they market new ones too)
I compensated between $100-120 for it and shipping is 2.95. I love overstock. I am not professional by any means and merely get to sew contained by batches when my 3 little boys are not bugging me, but enjoy been sewing for years. I've sewn curtains, showy stuff for the boys rooms, a dress, some baby clothes and bedding next to this machine and I own loved it.

if you arent going to do anything super heavy self just turn to walmart and get one. they arent too expensive and they singer and brother etc. apposite brands.......they also make sergers which work pretty accurate for alot of things if you get pious on the reg machine you might wanna carry a serger.
I'm a sewing machine technician and will inform you DO NOT get a cheap plastic device from Wal-Mart or wherever. The ancient machines are the best. Or look in thrift stores or patio sales and find an antiquated one for cheap. If you turn the handle and the hypodermic goes up and down and try the motor and it works consequently spend a little more and own the repair guy service it (yellow pages). Clean, oil, and adjust. I'm sure you can do adjectives this for under 200 dollars. The behind the times all metal beefy machines with a moment ago basic stitch pattern are all you inevitability and they will last you forever. I find matured machines all the time for 25 to 50.00 . Then a short time ago have it serviced. Good luck to you.

Don't purchase a sewing machine from a big box store or online. Go to a reputable trader in your home town. Why??
All contrivance brands have low ending and high close machines, you don't have to earnings a fortune to get a glorious quality mechanism.
Most dealers present free classes with the mart of a machine. They coach you how to operate the machine, how to verbs the machine, how to use the foot that come with the piece of equipment. These are not sewing classes, but machine operating classes.
Most dealer take machines as trade-ins, so you own the option of buying an used (experienced) electrical device. A reputable dealer will budge through the machine to craft sure everything works and will do routine maintenance previously the machine is sold.
If you want the piece of equipment to last a lifetime, I would look for a seller who sells Bernina, Viking, Elna or Pfaff.
You want a salesperson who can also repair your machine if prerequisite. Most independent dealers repair personnel are trained by the company who make the machine.
You may money a little more for a appliance from a local dealer, but believe me, if and when you hold a problem, knowing you can go to the vendor and get abet is priceless. Many times the problem with a sewing domestic device is operator error. It is nice when you can cart your machine to the merchant, and show them the problem. If the problem is the operator, the provider can show you what you are doing wrong; and you avoid an unnecessary repair bill.
Sewing can be great fun and a useful skill, but if you don't hold a quality device it can be extremely frustrating. Good Luck!
