How to determine if insulated wire is "hot" - without damaging the wire, if disconnection is not an option
Answers:
for about $10 you can get a circuit tester that chirps if A.C. voltage is present,, I use mine all the time when working as this doubles my protection,, making sure I turned off the right breaker, or if there is a problem.. just press a button and move the point close to the circuit,, another even has a sensitivity knob!

U can buy a voltage meter....they are really cheap and handy, but there would have to be a small section exposed in order to test it...........what exactly are U working on???

Home Depot sells a pen-sized device to test for voltage. If you can see the wire, black is usually hot. White is the neutral. If it is connected to an outlet, hot is on the right side as you are looking at the outlet from in front, and if it is an outlet that has one slot smaller than the other, the small slot is connected to the hot wire.
