what's the best kind of ridge vent for a house?
Answers:
We've got the one that goes across the entire roof. It is made of a light weight metal and seems to work well. It was easy to install. We put it on before we put on the shingles. My parents used those type of vents that spin and look like a metal basket ball on top of your roof(i believe they call them turbines) They were good too until they started to squeak and make other annoying noises.
EDIT: see next answer; Nobody said don't use turbines. However, If you do, ask about maintanance and keep it up because at night when everything is quiet you don't want to hear the racket they start making.

When you lay the plywood on the rafters, keep at least a one inch space on both sides. What I use is Kora-vent (I;m not sure if the spelling) Cora-vent Whatever. It comes in a roll about 12 inches wide and about 1 inch think. It looks like Fiberglas insulation but way more durable. The rolls are 25 ft. long. Roll it lengthwise on the ridge and nail it. Then cut and install the ridge-cap (cut shingles.) over it.
This is less noticable than the metal ridge vent that comes in 10 ft. lengths you nail on top of the shingles.
