How do you start a siphon?

I'm trying to drain a water tank. My hose is too long to suck on it to start. How else can I start a siphon?

Answers:
Water is not compressible. Air is.
The end of the siphon should be below the water source to keep the water flowing.
You can buy a cheap pump at an auto supply company if you do not wnt to use your mouth
The sucking is done to get rid of the air which has no wieight and does not flow throught he line.

Other answers:
Sucking on it is the only way, it can't be too long. Also in order to keep it going make sure the hose is all down hill from the tank. Best wishes

F___ that siphon! Be a man and go out and get a trash pump to drain that sucker!
Fill the hose with water. (You can just submerge it in the tank.) Make sure the end in the tank is well below the water line.

Make sure no water comes out of the free end until you have placed it WAY below the water line.

Open the hose.
totaly imerse the hose then block one end and un block when you have the end where you want to drain, making sure that this is lower than the surface of what you want to drain then let gravity take over!
Make Gravity work for you. Fill the hose with water (from the tap). Crimp it tightly so it remains filled with water, then place it so you have a good downhill run between whatever you're emptying to what's being filled. Uncrimp and it will start flowing.
