Decorating - filler?

Have done my own decorating for years but normally, when it comes to fillers I've just put on a bit with a thingy so it doesnt take much sanding down. However, have had some bad dog toothy damage to two of my doors and they (Edwardian) look like shredded wheat in places. I dont think its worth me repairing them 10 per/c now but I do want them to look ok - so do I SLAP it on (the polyfilla) or scrape off the excess as I'm going along. Bear in mind there really are pits and troughs.

The best thing to use is a wood filler. They are very good. Keep air tight as much as possible to avoid going hard. You can get them in different wood colours.

Use a two pack filler as it wont shrink when it drys and is tougher.
you put the filler..preferably decorators caulk its called...spread it over making sure its raised then when dry u sand it down smooth,,extra work but gives a good finish
use a decent wood filler, just as its about to harden, shape it how you want it with a sharp knife it saves on the sanding
