How to box in basement beams?

Answers:
My beams had a 2x8 that sat directly on top of them. The wood stuck out past the edges of the iron beam. I bought a 1x8 and glued it with construction adhesive to the bottom of the beam. Clamped it, let it sit overnight - clamp it well and in MANY places. I was sure to align it perfectly with the top 2x8 that sat above the beam.

I then simply screwed sheetrock onto the sides and then bottom. Put corner edging, mud, tape joints, sand and paint and it looks great. I can provide some sketches and photos if you're interested.

I was asked for more details and since I couldn't easily upload images here, I posted to my blog. If you want more info check out www.Hail2Pitt.org and more specifically today's entry on the subject: What is the typical rate/price per square ft. for laying marble tile?
