What's the best way to strip wallpaper of walls without using a steamer or something similar?

Answers:
I have had very good results with DIF. You may have to scratch the wall paper first with a Paper Tiger or another perforating tool devised for use on wallpaper. Then spray on the DIF and wait a minute for it to soak in and them start peeling.

Other answers:
Soak the paper with warm water using a sponge or cloth

You can wet it but steaming is so easy and steamers are so cheap, why would you not want to use one?
There's this little tool that is round with a bunch of little spikes on it and you rub it all over the wallpaper and it perforates it enough to let in steam or dampness from a towel to allow it to come off easier. This will however take you quite awhile to do.
If the front of the wallpaper comes off pretty easily, mix about 5 parts water to 1 part liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle and spray it on the wallpaper. Just remember to open the windows b/c it will give you a headache, but it worked for me.
Absolutely soak it through... go over it with sand paper first to make it porous!
You've got two options!

Option 1 (Painful on your back)

Soak thoroughly with warm water to which you add a dab of washing up liquid (Don't ask me why because i don't know but it does work (I did it)

Option 2 (Painless)

Flutter your eyelashes at boyfriend/partner/male friend/neighbour and play helpless female. it might cost you a dinner/date but you'll save your back (And fingernails)

Good luck!
Dynamite is always a last resort. Then once you've blown the wall into little pieces you can peel the bits of paper off nice and easy. ;o)

Steamer is the best. The only alternative to that is sponge and water...repeatedly....and scrape until your hand falls off.
Spray with hot water, as hot as you can get it, let stand a few seconds and spray again, this will soften the wallpaper paste, try to start at a seam with a wide putty knife and loosen the paper, work in small areas. When you are done wash the walls with TSP to remove excess wallpaper paste, patch any areas that need patched then prime and paint.
Strip the easy bits off then get a spray with water and lil bit of washing up liquid, squrt walls leave for 5 mins wallpaper should come off easy,,
its a pain but a wet sponge and a paint scraper, soak sponge in hot water every time you wipe the wall paper it will loosen the glue then take a scraper best is the dull wide one, be careful not to dig deep or you will be patching the walls as well time cons. but it is worth it in long run did the bedrmand looks great
score walls with tiger paw scorer and then sponge with wall paper remover and water mixture should peel right off. 2 step process from my experience go over it once front comes off, go over it again pasted side comes off not too hard.
Buy a tool called a PAPER TIGER and DIF wall paper remover from Lowes or Home Depot. It's still going to be messy and hard work.
Score first with any abrasive tool or a blunt knife(you do not want to damage the plaster beneath) and then nothing beats a good soaking of the paper. You do not even have to add anything to the water and after a few minutes you will find the paper comes off in lovely strips, which I find most satisfying. It's amazing how many layers there are sometimes!
