black spots on the ceiling?

the leak has been fixed and the black spots have not spread in over a year...i don't want to replace the ceiling, i want to cover the spots, white paint does not cover it....what will?

Answers:
clean with strong mix bleach water, let dry completely, then cover with a paint primer called "Kiltz", then repaint. the Kiltz will stop mold and mildew growth.

Other answers:
use bleach, it'll kill the mold.
use bleach, it'll kill the mold.
If it is indeed mold, you may have to have the ceiling patched. The growth may not show on your side, but may be getting worse on the back.
Try a paint called KILZ. You can get it at any home improvement store. It comes in spray and brush types, depending on the area to be covered and how heavy the mold damage is. Use 2-3 coats as a base before painting with regular latex or enamel.
If the bleach suggestion doesn't work, try using a good primer before hand. If that doesn't work, put clear urethane over the area, sand lightly, prime it and paint it.
Use a sealant - several out there, like z-prime or bullseye - you can add a mildewcide to it.. Then paint over that.

Thanx FunLovin - I forgot about Kilz!
There is a white paint made specially for this purpose. It is called Killz. It contains mold killer as well as white paint. You may need to make several coats.
The mold is probably dead, but it's left behind a nice surprise. You could scrape that part of the ceiling, and then fill in the indentation with spackle. Even if the black spot is still there, the spackle will cover it nicely. Then you can just paint over it.
you got mold under your paint, you may try bleach, or steeple over it and it looks fine.
you can try kilz, paint at home depot.
Spray the spots with bleach, be sure to cover carpet and furniture, it will bleach out the mold spots, you should have done this before you painted, try Kilz, two coats then paint.
There has been so much talk about mold and spores...I would cut out that portion of the sheetrock and replace it. This is a small job...for alot less hassle later! Covering it up, means it is bound to return and probably ten fold. We had a mold issue in our old shower where there would be mold (black spots) growing on our bathroom ceiling. They would go away with Tilex w/bleach, only to return in a couple weeks. YUCK! Eventually they were all over our ceiling. We even put the anti mildew stuff in the paint.....did not work! Good luck!
I agree with Marylyn. Cut out the cancer. When it comes to mold its the only way.
Put a coat or two of Primer on the ceiling before you paint it.
there are sealants we use for water and fire damage restoration to seal damaged area's. your paint store will carry these products under different names. some names are Kilz or SPS depending on who makes it. its basically a primer coat with a shellac base. same idea for sealing knots in wood before painting to prevent the knots from burning through. Just ask your paint store for a sealant to cover water stains.
Paint the rest of the ceiling black to match. I do red doors that away as often as I can.
