Try this stuff: www.pristineblue.com.
Can order on-line. Uses a tiny amount every 2 weeks. Simplest, most effective thing I've ever found. (By the way, it's made in Nebraska.)

You can use bleach but it is much weaker than pool chlorine. K-Mart sells a product called Vinyl Shock, it is a good pool product for vinyl pools.

depends on how big the pool is, if it is a bigger pool, put in three-five cups of bleach every morning, stir it a little, let it sit for a couple of hours, and then swim! It is just like putting in chlorine. and the other chemicals in pools...
Yes you can use bleach, but only about 1 table spoon per gallon and if exposed to sunlight you will have to replenish. But to do so would be best to purchace a chlorene test to be sure you have the correct levels. Guessing is not a good option. these are available at Wal Mart or Home Depot or maybe Sears. If no store convient then use the internet, ex. e-bay. and purchase through the mail. Even so it would also be a good Idea to keep covered when not in use assuming the pool can be reasonably covered to prevent alge growth or birds from making a deposit or something falling in and drowing.
Ultra Bleach in Swimming Pools
In many parts of the country, plain 5.25% household bleach is the cheapest, and sometimes the easiest, way to chlorinate your pool. What you want is plain, generic bleach -- no scent, no easy pour spout, no national brand. Clorox used to be an acceptable source of bleach, but they've begun trying to 'spice' up the brand, by adding this and that to their bleach. As a result, you should AVOID the Clorox brand product, and select a store brand instead.
Ultra comes in two basic flavors: 'no-goo', and more expensive OR 'with-goo' and more expensive. But, if you can't find plain bleach, here's your photo guide to Clorox Ultra, in both the gooey and non-gooey flavors!
Bleach with 'no-goo'
Yes, you can use bleach...
But, I would get a pool testing kit, and after you add the bleach...(about a cup full per 2 thousand gallons should be suffiecient), then I would test the pool after 15 minutes, and see if you have a chlorine residual.
The recommended reading is .5mg/l of chlorine, that means that you have killed any and all bacteria in the pool, and with the residual, you have a wee bit extra to be sure. (If you didnt have a residual, then you wouldnt know if you had added enough!).
Now, dont be alarmed if you have a HUGE amount of chlorine in the pool water and it registers about a 2.5mg/l !!
Because that is SAFE!! In fact, that is what the City of Steubenville, Water Department keeps our drinking water at that level...so, you can be assured you wont die with that much in it :)
Oh, one other thing... 2.0mg/l will actually kill bass, or other fish...so, we have more in our water system than is allowed to be discharged into the rivers and streams...go figure!! LOL!!
Ok, have a great time in the pool...
I wish you well..

Pools require more than bleach, bleach is hard on the vinyl liners in a pool, there are non chlorine products availiable. Check out Baquacil or Pristine Blue. You need to try to locate a pool sales or supply place in your area and have your water tested, this test is free and they will tell you what chemicals you need, sometimes you almost feel like a chemist or something!
We buy from www.intheswim.com. They are the cheapest and have overnight delivery for no extra shipping cost. We treat our pool once a week. Good luck
