Backer Block for Crown Molding?

I am installing crown molding with a spring angle of 52 and 38 degree.

What angle cut should i use to make a aid block i can use as a nailer?

also please confirm for the backing block, its a miter cut NOT a compound miter.

gratitude

Answers:    The backer block should be 38* (from the bottom up). I am assuming you are using this for a splice. Not really needed, when using scarfed joint, just a touch glue.
I am confused. Most crown molding is merely nail through to the studs in the wall. I am not aware of a sponsor block.
