What is the difference between mastic and morter?
i no the main differences but contained by the way that it dries.

ok i wasnt specifc ample. i no what they are and to the first answer yes morter is flexible most tile morter has latex surrounded by it to give it flex. mastic is to be used for tiles up to 8x8, you can use it for bigger tiles but it take longer to dry. morter is a thinset morter and usually uses the moisture from the surface to cure. i remember a vendor ( i work at menards) describing me it was because they set up differently, i presume the mastic takes longer because it uses the atmosphere to help itself dry while the morter uses the moisture from the underlayment. is this correct???
Answers: The application is different as okay. Even though some mastics say right on the sign they can be used for floors, I would NEVER use it anywhere there would be lofty traffic. Because it can flex, it could come loose, break the grout, etc. I only use mastics on walls and mortars on floors. As far as taking moisture from the underlayment, I don't know anything roughly speaking that. Both should be going over proper subfloor or surfaces (hardibacker, wonderboard, ditra, good part concrete, etc)
The mortor has a set time , such as 1 hour ,, it does not dry it sets ,, mastic dries you can even accelrate or retard mortor
Mastic is essentially adhesive to hold the tile within place.
You then stamp it with morter.
Think of mastic as an cement, and mortar is cement. Both can have additives to adjust their compositions, but they are not interchangeable. Mastic is used for linoleum or bituminous tile, and mortar for ceramic and stone tile. Hope that help...
morter is for laying block or brick, mastic is for tile or pavers on the floor or walls.............used profoundly in swiming pools. Mastic is hose down proof.......morter will soak up water and will freeze and bust block or brick
