does anyone know what chemicals you need to stain concrete and what the process is?

I am a missionary in East Africa and I need to know what the raw materials are in staining concrete so that I can buy them here. And also how to apply etc.

Answers:

I have found that the oil that leaks from my truck makes a great concrete stain.

however getting even coverage is an issue.

There are special paints that you can use that act as a stain on concrete after is has been poured and cured. You can even paint designs and patterns to make it appear like flagstone or pavers.

I would suggest going to HGTV.com or Home Depot and Lowes websites and search under "masonry paint". I've stained concrete prior to pouring, but I got the impression from your question this concrete is already in place.

I know you're far away, so you may have to order finished products and have them sent. This type of paint or stain, and it's various pigments, may not be available in your area - either in raw form to mix or pre-mixed at a store. And if you're going to do a job - may as well do it right, you know?

The other part of your question - how to apply them. I've used masonry paint before, and it's pretty straight forward. Concrete must be cured, dry, and paint takes a while to dry. For best cohesion, if this is outdoors, do it during the dry season.

Good luck!
The stains used in decorative concrete are called Patina Stains. It is an acid stain that can either be brushed on or sprayed on with an all plastic garden sprayer (the acid stain with eat any metal) and then worked into the cleaned concrete with an acid brush in a circular motion. The stain must then be neutralized with a wash mixture of water and baking soda. Clean with water, you can mop it a few times or spray it with a hose. Then use a concrete sealer to bring out the color and protect it from any other liquids that would stain the concrete. Two coats are recommended.
Patina stains are available around the world. The best way to find them in your area is to use a local search engine.
