Stud put somebody through the mill?
Answers: you absolutly can, it's called sistering, and its done everyday contained by the remodeling/constuction industry. just engineer sure you secure it ok.
There shouldn't be a problem about that. Normally if you do, it's advisable that the stud runs from the top plate to the base plate for further strength.
I've seen it done on behind the times houses for remodeling purposes.
What is wrong with the first stud? If you attatch a stud to an existing stud, your walls will be cockeyed. Hardiback can be installed to exisiting studs. Good luck!
Not a problem, technique used all the time to allow for when the studs don't string up to the seams of doesn`t matter what the covering is.

Definitely. 'Scabbing' or 'sistering' studs, joists and rafter is often needed contained by remodelling for many reason. Make sure it is secure and flush beside the other studs.
Shouldn't be a problem providing you keep it even next to the existing one. Watch out for electric wires and plumbing near that stud.
