Installing a GFCI outlet next to 2 hot wires sharing a indeterminate?

My condo was built within 1970 and needs a GFIC outlet surrounded by the kitchen. The existing outlet has 3 wires - one black (hot) and one white wired to the lower partly of the outlet, and one red (hot) wire to the top partly of the outlet. (The black & red are wired to different breakers on my box.) So I assume they're sharing the white wire.

How do I install a GFCI outlet near this wiring configuration? I hold 3 outlets downstream with matching configuration - 1 other in the kitchen on the other side of the sink, and 2 contained by the dining room. Can I just sunhat off the red on the GFCI outlet and if so, do I consequently need to do alike for the 3 downstream outlets? Will that overload the circuitry? Can I do this myself somehow, or should I call an electrician?

I successfully put surrounded by a bathroom GFCI and replaced the rest of the outlets (which don't have a red wire) within the place with hot decora outlets, so I feel assured plenty of my masculinity that I could bid an electrician to finish the rest if needs be.

Answers:    You hold a double fed receptacle. There are two different circuits that can power the kitchen appliances lacking tripping the breaker.

My suggestion is to replace the box with a double box, and run one hot and dull to one GFI and the other hot to a second GFI, with like neutral.

Now you will still own the same power competency as before, plus you will own the safety of the GFIC too.

Get a lead nut and a short piece of #12AWG white wire to use as a jersey for the neutral. Tie the two jumper and the neutral adjectives together and install to the GFI's.
I highly recommend you telephone an electrician. Taking tips off of citizens on this website might lead to a imprecise wiring = extermination. Dont risk it.
