What kind of concrete mix do i need to use for building a retainer wall with center blocks?
Answers:
I am a mason contractor, you want type"S" for cinder blocks. that is 3700 psi, when it gets hard it is like concrete. Type n is for bricks it will crack in the joints when a house settles, but type s is so strong it will break the brick if a house settles.
For your application you want type S for blocks, to figure how many blocks you need figure how long you want the wall to be and times that length by how high you want and times it by 1.125 that will give you the amount of blocks. I also word recommend drilling holes in the footing and installing rebar every 4 foot and filling those with cells with mortar also. it will improve the strength 1000 times and your wall will be their for ever.

first of all you don't need to use any thing special then what you allready are using and for more strength poor your footer the same time as your wall that way the blocks can sit snug in both the footer and the wall depending on the size of your wall you may want to go around to new subdivisions and ask any of the concrete workers if they would like to do a side job for extra money that way you don't have to try and figure it out and it may be more concrete than you could handel and it would be cheeper to order it even if you have to get a yard or two it will be a lot easier ordering it then mixing all of it by hand concrete here in missouri is going for about 80 dollars a yard call your local concrete plants to find out how much they would charge per yard good luck
The following website tells you about installing a concrete block wall yourself. You are saying center blcok. Did you mean to say cinder block? That is a common name for concrete masonry block. Actually it is called concrete masonry units or CMU.
Check this out and goodluck... laying block is hard work- but you can do it if I can.
