I have a "popcorn" ceiling. I painted it, and now the popcorn is falling. What should I do?

Should I just take down all of the popcorn? Why didn't somebody tell me this would happen?

Answers:
Yes, your popcorn ceiling was sprayed on with a machine. It sounds like with a water based paint the moisture got behind the popcorn and loosed it away from the ceiling. When I would paint them I was careful not to OVER WORK back and forth with my roller. One direction and roll it and not go back until it is totally dry. Then that seals it. Then you can go back again if you missed a spot. Now you say it is coming down. Make sure it is at least 24 hour dry. Then decide if it is coming off too much...if it is you may have to scrap it all off and have a smooth surface ceiling. I never had one get that bad. Be patient

popcorn ceiling are out..scrap it off sand and paint

yes, I would recommend taking down the popcorn ceiling. It is not really seen as often now as it was in the past. It can easily be taken off with sand paper and then primed and repainted.
scrape the mess off and start over. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to primer it with oil based Kilz primer first. Use a roller and make one continues pass along the shortest wall. when u run out of primer in the roller re-wet it, skip a few inches and continue. After the first pass, make another parallel to it a few inches away and so on. The point is NEVER go over a wet spot twice or the popcorn WILL come down. After the first passes are dry paint the parts in between that you skipped the first time. After that is dry, paint the whole think again with killz just like normal to cover up the roller marks. Use a 3/8 or 1/2 roller for best results. The reason for using killz (or binz) oil based primer is that it will actually bond the popcorn back to the sheetrock. The water based primers will not. Ive done this several times to many different rent houses and it is a lot of work, but it is a lot easier than scraping down nasty old popcorn . after u are done with the primer u can paint with a ceiling flat paint, but i never do.i mean whats the point, unless u dont want a white ceiling. One thing to remember, Kilz gives off some nasty fumes. Unless u want to see pink elephants, get a real respirator, not a dust mask.
Maybe u should try something that doesn't fall. what about painting tissue paper
I hate that type of ceiling - too hard to clean, etc... I would scrape it off.. You can do this with a paint scraper. It's messy, but it's not difficult.. Just time consuming. If you do insist on fixing it, though, you can buy the popcorn stuff in a spray can - also messy, and also kind of expensive - at any home improvement place.
If it is already coming off the best way to fix it right is to scrape it off and replace it. Here is a good tip for scrapping it off. Take a roller pad and a pan of water. Roll on the water like you would if it were paint. (Be careful of rolling to fast you could get wet) Once the texture is wet take a scrapper at least 6in wide and scrape it off. It actually comes off easily and quicker than you would think. Be careful not to scrape to hard or you will rip into your drywall.
