First things first...OPEN THE FLU! Don't forget or you'll have smoke coming inside, rather than going up the chimney. If it is a wood burning type fireplace, take news paper and roll it. Put it on the grate, then lay some tinder on the paper like one of the above posters suggested...a nice sized little stack on the paper. Light the paper and wait. Don't throw larger logs on until you know the tinder is burning and not just the paper, otherwise your larger logs will snuff out the flame. Once the tinder is burning, then you can put in some small logs, and when that starts to burn nicely, then you can put some larger ones in. It will burn better if you burn two larger logs rather than one at a time. Good luck!

Depends, if you have a gas fireplace, turn on the gas, light the pilot and flip the switch....if it's a wood burning one, get some tinder (dry wood and newspapers) under the logs and light them up. Be sure to leave room for air to get in underneath otherwise the fire will peter out,

like the lady said, what kind of fire? fire in my neck of the woods is wood, kinlen, paper , and fire and air.
Wal Mart has some very good fire starters, really depending on how much you want to spend or how lazy you are. If you want a very quick fire, the best thing to do i invest in a splitting maul and keep a supply of smaller split wood around to start with. If you a real tight wad, buy a buck saw and the paper covered sawdust wax logs and cut about 1 inch thick pieces off of it. But do not ever use kerosene, charcoal lighter or other flammable liquids.
