Why are carpenter pencils so huge and flat?
Answers: The other answers are correct but I would like to clutch the answer a bit further. I am sure the original belief was in principal to make a pencil so it would not roll bad of a work bench. But the design provides many other benifits which I give attention to have pretty much come along for the ride.

The wider flatter pancil make for a wider lead which is much stronger and will hold up much better surrounded by "pencily abusive" environments. They are much more durable than a regular pencil.
Sure you could always use a fatty pencil but it will roll. Not individual that a fatty pencil will not fit behind your ear... Carpenter pencils fit aft ears and under hat better.
They do make pencil sharpeners specially for carpenter pencils. But within most cases it ends up just anyone another tool in a tool backpack already overfilled with tools.
I love my carpenter pencils. You can never hold enough.
They're flat so they don't roll sour of anything when they're set down. They're wider to make it easier to grip.
