Adding a dimmer switch to a standard lamp?

In my basement, I enjoy a light at the top and anothe reading light at the bottom of the stairs. I also have a wall switch by respectively light. The mode it's wired allows you to turn each street lamp on or off from any the top or bottom of the stairs. Should I be able to make a payment a dimmer switch to the lights?

Answers:    Yes you can. Buy one or two, 3 way dimmer switches. I'm not sure why you would want to dim the stairway lights, but it will incontestably work. You can replace one or both switches with the 3 process dimmers.
Yes, it can simply replace the existing switch. The wiring is a bit different, but you can find that usually surrounded by the instructions it comes with. You can also win a switch that has both a dimmer and a regular switch.
Yes! You can do by replacing both switches next to 3-way dimmer switches. Check your local home improvement store or check on-line at levitonproducts.com
Only 1 dimmer. Picture 2 dimmers, 1 turned adjectives the way stale: the 2nd dimmer can't turn on a light that's turned adjectives the way down. With 1 dimmer and and a regular switch, the regular switch is 'other on' except for being contained by the off position at the switch--hope that make sense. And those CFL's, unless otherwise stated on the package, don't work on dimmer circuits.
You can donate a dimmer to incandescent lighting only. You necessitate a three way dimmer switch resembling the one below.
Should you? That is an ethical question that contained by my many years of electrical experience I'm inclined to voice emphatically no. Could you? Sure. If you do decide to play beside electricity turn the power off. Grab a flash neutral and some tools.
Some common issues you obligation to know with 3way switches and dimming....
1. You can singular use 1 dimmer per switch, unless you use "smart switches" see x10 switches for more details. But i doubt you will need a smart switch.
2. You generally don't find dimmers sold for fluorescent lighting at your local hardware store. Plus I believe the fluorescent light itself have to support dimming. You have special directive them and they cost more. So no fluorescent lights.

Now some basic understanding on how a 3way switch works..
A 3way switch basically have a source and two switch carriers,
recurrently called switch legs. They are as a rule white and red and the source is normally black. Though, colors don't be a sign of a thing when you own a color blind electrician and your 3way switch can use any color it wants. So lacking the right knowledge and tools you can smoothly make a exceedingly easy favour into a big problem. The best way to approach this is too write down the color of the wires and what color of the screw they attach to since you remove them. Normally the source will be on the darker screw and the two carrier wil be on the two lighter bronze screws. Dont over crowed the switch box beside wire, use simply the necessary amount of lead. hook up the green wire finishing and reconnect the switch/dimmer to the box. Finally turn the power back on.
