How long and how expensive would it take to dig your own modest lake?

I had a 3 acre lake dug about ten years ago. Guy came out with a bulldozer and did a nice job in 3 days. If memory serves it cost about $4,000. But that was 10 years ago.

you'd need you own back ho. She/he can go earn money. You'll need a lot of money and a lot of ho's to make that lake.
A lake is a bit much. I think a pond would be much easier.

That is a very vague question. How deep, how big, what is the terrain like? There are alot of variables.
If you have the money maybe a couple of months, but if you'll be doing the digging by yourself then it could take you years to complete.....maybe get a group of friends and family to help!
A good strip of decent land (preferably your own), a few strategically placed sticks of dynamite/C4 and you could have the rough form in no time. ;o) Or you could wait for a meteorite to land in your back garden (this would save you so much hard work). Either way though, your water bill will be HUGE!
if it's a lake and not a pond with a shovel it might take a few years. with a backhoe and dozer anywhere from a week to a month, depending on it's size..money, well a shovel will cost ya about 20 bucks and the equipment for rent about 2,000 to 10,000..or if it was hired out then you better rob a bank or hit the lottery
If you have earth moving equipment not to long if you have shallow well or underground stream they could be your water supply the cost depends on how big and weather you have a water source if you are planing on digging this by hand with a shovel i would stick to a garden pond with a fountain this could be done in a weekend for less then a 1000 dollars.
