Can anyone tell me how to make a hole for the tap in a ceramic wash basin please?

The basin is marked underneath by a ceramic plug where the taps should go, but how does one make a hole without destroying the basin?

Answers:
Assuming you cannot just remove the ceramic plug, drilling into ceramic is a difficult business, and with an expensive item like a washbasin, my advice would be to have a professional do it. If you make a mistake, you could chip, crack or shatter the basin.

However, here are some tips to bear in mind: when drilling into ceramic, you are not so much drilling as grinding, and the tip of the drill can get very hot, so keep it wet. Better to drill slowly than fast. Tape an X with tough tape (insulating tape?) over the site of the hole before you start, to prevent slippage and chipping.
