how do I seal the wood after applying water base stain?

wood is very hard, takes the stain well, but stain is not stable - will rub off with slightest moisture

Answers:
go oto rockler.com and look at the sealers and after you are finished sealing. between coats (2-3). use 1000 grit auto sandpaper 1st coat, 2nd coat 2000 grit and after last 2000 grit ( ALL WET SANDED) use automotive (mothers or equivalent) rubbing compound and then finish with turtle wax. sounds weird but it works and it shines!

Poly urethane, or varnish, that's your next step. Or you could polish with English Wax, but that is expensive and time consuming.
I would use a stain with a sealant already mixed in. There are many to choose from.
try some thompsons water seal works great and lasts a long time
Water based polyurethane or acrylic
you could try toung oil, or wax but they need re applying ever once in a while, wattyl do an acid cat 2 pack laquer, but i dont know if that would react with what you have done... alternativley if you (rub) polish timber enough it will luster of its own accord, but will not be water proof... any oil product will seal timber but needs reapplying... penut oil is good as it does not go rancid, there are also many water based lacuers out there, try a sample of a few different products to see what works....
