Should I hire a pro to re-shingle my roof or do it myself?

doing it is labor intensive but actually quite easy to do. not sure about per foot cost from a pro but you could do it yourself for far less than what they would charge since you would be doing all the work, and not them. you know how labor jacks up anything price related. simply strip off all shingles and nails, remove old tar paper, lay down new tar paper, start brad nailing shingles from the bottom up (might wanna rent a nail gun for this) and keep going until done. not really hard. but again it is labor intensive.

10 x 30 will cost about 300.00 for the material. A pro roofer will charge you about 1200.00 to 1800.00 to do the job.
If you plan on doing it yourself. Find out if there are one or two layers of shingles on the roof. If its two, you'll need to tear it all off. if its only one, then you can do it right over the ones that are there. However it could also be a piece of wood that may need replacing. Then you need a roofer.

don't do it yourself-why? because as easy as it my look there are technical things one needs to know to ensure that you don't have more leaks etc.
no i am not a roofer-but i do know that its never a good idea to fix your own roof. have pro do it-at least then you'll know you can blame someone else if it doesn't work out well.

But if your tight on time go through the phone book and get estimates from different roofing companies. Also ask for references, or something of that nature. Try to avoid big companies, they may charge you an arm and a leg, and not to mention you first born son. Then again if you are tight on cash a big company may offer a line of credit(as long as your credit is good). Remodeling your house can become very expensive, even when you do it yourself. Good luck.
coming from a family of roofers, (the men) i can tell you that unless you are absolutely sure you know where the leak is you should consider hiring a roofing firm.
while the work is not all that difficult if you know what you are doing, the leak may actually becoming from somewhere else on the roof and is running down the roof from elsewhere. you may patch the roof above the leak only to find that was not the true area water is entering the home.

Well it really depends.
Have you ever done it before? If you have never done in it, then maybe you should hire someone. If you have done it a little, you could do it to save some money. One easy way to save money is if you have a friend that knows how to and ask them to help you.
I do not know how much a contractor will charge you to do it, but i do know that a lot of contractors will let you help them, therfore getting some money off of the final price.
It comes down to if you have no clue what you are doing, you shouldn't do it yourself, or just by yourself.
If there is a leak, part of the structure will probably need to be repaired/replaced, which makes this more than a beginner should take on. The shingling itself is not very hard if you have someone who has done it before to direct you.
Perhaps you can cut a deal with someone to give you a break on the price if you do some of the labor.

If it's just a straight shot, with not much pitch, with no valleys or complicated angles, it will be a lot cheaper to do it yourself. Search the web for the proper techniques, it's really pretty easy but it's labor intensive......for cheap labor, you can bribe your friends with pizza and beer and tell them you have a hot neighbor that likes to sun tan and I'm sure they'll be no problem in getting them to help.
i dont know the cost but ask around for someone who has done a good job and they can give you a free estimate on the cost then you can decide if the cost would be greater than buying the materials yourself and if you have the time and the help to do it
