You can buy PVC barrels cheaply. We heat them contained by the oven and bend them. You'll have to practice next to temperatures. There are also different types of moldable plastics that can be molded near a heat gun. There are also some that can be heated on the stove and start out within bead form. Here's one type:

They're in the form of bead, so you can make some of the details more effortlessly.
You're also going to need rivets. Lots and lots of rivets. For assistance and tips on constructing armor, you may want to contact The Society For Creative Anachronism, Inc., even though it's a medieval re-enactment group. There are people who use plastics to bring in cheap armor to practice in, as capably as steel helmets, etc.
