I have white cabinets, I want the look of french country.?
Answers:
Well, it is more like using a glaze with 1 part burnt umber latex or acrylic paint, 1 part water and 1 part Floetrol. The water thins the paint and the Floetrol gives the paint more transparency and open time. Use a soft t-shirt like cloth soaked in the glaze, wiping with the grain and then use a lint free cloth dampened to wipe it off leaving the glaze in the recessed areas and just enough to have the white showing through. Practice on some white painted chip board first to test the look you want before applying it on the cabinets. It's an awesome look, have fun and good luck!
PS The technique I outlined above is for wood cabinets. It will work, however, on laminate if you use a stain blocking primer like Kilz or Zinser (which I prefer because it leaves a smoother finish), first.

It depends on the existing finish of your cabinet. If they are laminated anything you apply will not stick. If they are white painted wood, rough them with some sandpaper, and also some of the edges (for the distressed look) and try some dark stain on a rag and rub it in. I would test a small area, or better yet on a separate piece of wood that resembles your cabinet so you can try out different techniques. Also, diynetwork.com has alot of helpful instructions as well as videos. Good luck! Sounds like fun.

that's a good start & it's cheaper than going to france.it's agood idea to take the doors & hardware off..another solution is to strip the old finish off and start new
.you can do this by sanding off the old finish or using a stripper.however make sure you have a good ventilated area to work if you choose to use a stripper.& plenty of dollars to put in their garter.
You may also want to replace a set of doors with glass doors. A local cabinet maker, Lowes or Home Depot could give you a price.
White wash them a pretty french color by lightly going over them with paint, then sand in some spots. Shabby chic them.
