I need ideas for a sandbox lid?

We bought a play structure made of wood for my kids, underneath the fort there is an area for a sandbox. I filled it with play sand and temperarily put a tarp over it with stakes so animals couldn't use it. I would like a cover that fits properly and can keep the water from my sprinklers from caving it in and lying stagnant on top of cover. I'm going to need to do this myself so it can't be too difficult. I also can't afford to buy one thats custom fit. I'm ready to dig up the sand and forget it. HELP!!

Answers:
you can create your own custom fit lid by buying som plexy glass and a couple of 2x4s. cut the 2x4s to the inner diamiter of the sand box.lay the plexy glass over the top of the sand box cut 4 inches so 41 inches over hang on all sides of the box. with a small hand held propane torch heat and bend down edges.

Other answers:
Maybe some sheets of wood, some hinges and handles so it's easy to remove, store and put back on. You could probably stain it or something to make it waterproof.

try using some plywood
Buy a metre high or more tomato stake and a tennis ball, cut a hole in the tennis ball and place it over the blunt end of your tomato stake then drive the pointy end of the stake hard into the middle of the sandbox. Then place your tarpaulin over the top of the tennis ball and secure the tarp the normal way.

The tennis ball prevents the tomato stake tearing though the tarp and the stake gives some height to the tarp so water runs of it.
