When installing a peep hole on a door, how high should it be?

There seems to be a standard for hotel peep holes, what is it? How high should it be to accomodate everyone's needs?

I personally put mine as high as the smallest person living in my house...(My wife is only 4'11" so, that was the height).

Since the lady in your life is going to be the one most concerned with using it, I would make it "her" eye level...

Now, I had children, and we had a small stool that they put in front of the door, if someone knocked and they wanted to see who it was.

But, they have since grown up, and dont need the stool and its just right for each of them too.

I'm a manager of a hotel in a chain. Our peepholes are cut at 5 foot 5 inches. We actually get audited on that nonsense. God forbid our maintenance man hang a new door and drill the peep hole an inch too high to too low.

I got a short wife so I put it where she can look through it. Everyone taller can stoop down a little bit.
