To remove rust stains, rub with kerosene, and scour with fine grade steel wool. If rust is difficult to remove, allow kerosene to remain long enough to loosen. Commercial rust removers may also be used.
As far as painting is concerned, you might want to check with the helpful folks at Home Depot or Lowes! Hope that helps!

The best and most thourough would be to sand blast or glass bead the pieces. If that's not practical, first wire brush the pieces and remove to bare metal if possible, then prime with a rust resistant primer and paint with a good enamel spray paint. Rustoleum brand is a good choice.
Boogirl, get yourself some rubber gloves, some rust remover from a hardware store and brush it on. Be careful, some are caustic and will burn your clothes. When the rust is gone, follow the instructions on the remover tin. At the same hardware store you can buy metal paint - the one I would recommend, but may not be available in your hometown, is Hammerite, it is a black paint used for gates and railings. It gives a beautiful finish. If you don't want to go to all that trouble, get some small can of car spray paint and do it that way. Cheaper, probably easier and definitely quicker..............
First you have to sand or wire brush all the loose, scaly rust off. Wash them clean with a water-soluble cleaner. Then treat with KBS RustBlast to neutralize the rust. Follow with two thin coats of KBS RustSeal maybe their gloss black color. You heirlooms will look like new and the rust will never return. I swear by this stuff. My husband restores cars for a hobby.
