Restoration?

Recently purchased an old "Singer" sewing machine. Most everything intact and can probably still function with a new belt. I want to use it as a desk so I would like to keep it from deteriorating any further. Should I re-paint the iron or seal them? Any suggestions on a lacquer finish for the wood surface?
