does anybody know the thing about hanging bags of water on the porch to keep flies away?? what else can i use.

I just moved in my house it has a huge porch, someone told me to hang bags of water around and it would keep the flies away,,if you know any good homeremdies let me know?

I have seen this done quite a bit here in the South. People swear it works~I was told that the water reflects light into the many eyes of flies and it makes them think that it is a predator; thus, they go away.
I have been on many porches that have water bags and don't recall a fly problem.
