How do I shim a cabinet base?
Answers:
it's just a piece of wood that is tapered. typically called shim shingles and usually made of cedar or pine. you will need to place several shims around the cabinet base not just at the low corner. this helps distribute the weight of the new counter top.
Other answers:
Yes a shim is a "slice of wood"...or, actually a piece of wood that can be so long, or so wide, as to hold up whatever it is you need.
I would go and get a piece of wood, and saw off a 1/4 inch piece, (get hubby to do it, if he is handy), and shove it under the cabinet, where it needs to be leveled. That will take care of it.
Also, make it flush if its the front that needs leveled, so that you can put the base trim on the front and not have to worry about hitting the shim.
Make the shim about 3 inches wide.
I wish you well

You can buy shims at your local lumber store, maybe at a hardware store. You could use a shingle. Since you're raising on corner 1/4", you should also shim along the length for strength. In this case, a shingle may be a better choice.
There are pre-cut shims that taper to a point on one end-they're available at any hardware or building supplier. Simply drive it in with a hammer as far as you need to fill the gap, then cut it off with either a wood chisel or a handsaw flush with the edge of your cabinet.Be careful though not to drive it in so far that you disturb the new countertop, as it could break. If your shimming beforehand you're cool!!
Yuppers....
A shim is about 3-4 inches long, looks like a small wedge. And very very easy to do what it is you need to do. Trust me, my wife has never picked up a tool in her life and now she's all into it. I wish she would stop.
Anyways... Just swing on over to your local, ACE, Lowes, Home Depot, lumber center, etc... They cost about 3-5 bucks for a pack of about 10 to 12 of them. Trust me, you can do it and its no big deal.
make sure its level all the way round with wooden shims you can buy at a home depot
Yes that is what a shim is. It is thicker on one end so you can slide it up under the cabinet. You can also use small peices of wood you have and don't have to buy a pkg of shims. Just adjust it until your bubble in your level is centered. Best wishes!
If you have a table saw or radial arn it is pretty simple to own, just slice off a slim wedge. They are cheap and come in a pack. Works best if you insert one on each side and push them together. For further insurance that it does not vibrate out of place use elmers under and between just befor adjusting.
