Thanks for your help.!

Answers:    Sanding is an inefficient and risky method to remove finish (particularly if it is a veneer). I recommend the use of a chemical stripper with protective gear and accurate ventilation. Messy, but important, reliable and quick.

Then do a prompt, light sand. You are just cleaning up a bit, not resurfacing. I use 220 grit.

Staining can be a bit more difficult as some woods pinch stain extremely well and some poorly. And within are different types of stain (pigment and/or dye).

For finishing, the easiest is a wipe-on finish. You will need more coats as they don't build nifty, but tend to give a better result for a pupil.

I'd highly recommend this book from your local library or bookstore. You don't requirement to read and understand the undamaged thing, but cart a look at the sections that are relevant to your project.

I would also recommend once you buy your intended supplies to do a check panel on some scrap or the underside to see how your project is going to walk. Saves having to start over or come fund here and ask, "Now what do I do to fix this?"

Also do not rely on advice that you might draw from from "the guy at the big box store." 90% of them don't have the first model about wood finishing.

Do not even deduce about using an all-in-one finish approaching Polyshades.
Sand the tabletop down to bare wood consequently find a dark stain. The stain will look dark at first than it will look when dried so keep that contained by mind when you're applying the stain. Simple process, really. The label should show you approximate finish results so you can use that as a mention.
