how to make cabinets look like stainless steel without spending alot?
Answers:
We used aluminum flashing to cover a plywood counter in the kitchen as a temporary finish while we remodel. Sanded the counter, and used a contact adhesive to glue it down. Fooled a contractor who was working on the kitchen and wanted to know where we got our stainless counter from, at least until he looked closely!

Not sure if it would really work, but in theory this would (I would try it on a scrap piece of wood first):
Take off the cabinet doors, primer the doors and the actual shelving with two coats of primer, so that you cannot see any grain anymore. Then use that stainless steel paint they use on appliances. You can buy in at Lowes or Home Depot I believe, if not a paint specialty store will have it.
If you don't want to take the chance on painting the whole unit you could do the above to just the skeleton of the cabinets and the kick board area, add steel cabinet hardware and just paint the doors a clean white. It will give you accents of stainless steel but you won't overkill it. It will give it a clean modern look.
It would probably be good to add a coat of poly to it as well so that you can clean it and it will have a glossy look like cabinets should.
