Slate tiles over existing wood fireplace. Adhesive question??

I have an elder fireplace (1950) that is painted corrugated wood. It's the individual way to describe it, sort of similar to corduroy or old asbestos siding--think ridges.

The are that it encompass is about 1 foot contained by wide. My dad give me a box of slate tiles he had moved out over from refacing a front stoop and I would like to fit tightly these to the wood around my fireplace, grout it etc.

I have a tile saw (and a husband not that I entail one for this :-) ) so the size, etc is no trouble. I just aspiration to know what kind of sticky stuff to use. As it's a vertical surface it much adhere fast so it doesn't slide off.

Would gooey nail type of stuff work? I'm going to any Lowes or Home Depot in a few hours but would love some planning before I walk. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your input--have you ever done something approaching this?

Thanks again!

Answers:    somewhere under the attractive "corregated" facade is the floor structure. get down to that and later fasten a 1/4" to 1/2" chain mest to the structure with screw and brackets or whatever will support the mesh and still sit flush to the surface. The adhesive witll take the mesh and hold on better. as with the sticky stuff, slate is funny, i would ask home depot cuz slate has completely few materials that it works well beside. proly a morter or grout made for slate.
