I bought this house about a year ago. I never realized nor did my dumb *&^^&& house inspector ($538) that there was no main plumbing stack. There is however a black plastic (not PVC) pipe that runs into the attic and I am assuming that it goes to the roof vent. I still get this septic smell out of one of the floor vents when the heat pump kicks on. This started probably about 6-7 months ago. There is nothing leaking and everything is P-trapped. It only comes from this one vent. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Answers:
You should definately extend the vent out of your roof.
Do you have flexible duct work in your home? It sounds like you have a smell of "Septic Stink" from only one vent? Check that vent. I bet your duct work going to that vent is now or has at some point been soaked with water and that nasty water is what your smelling. It could be moldy or rotting.

that ABS pipe running into the attic is not code worthy.....
use a coupling and glue an extension through a hole in the roof to vent the sewer gases. be sure to use a flashing roofside on the pipe.
