Where is the best place to purchase lumber when building a fence?

I've heard Home Depot and Lowes don't have the best quality in lumber when it comes to fence supplies. Is there anywhere else in the North Carolina area that may have good lumber? Obviously it needs to be ready to go so I don't have to cut it myself.

Answers:
if i knew where you lived would have a better answer. so this is second best; find a local sawmill and get price from at least two of them for there is always the guy who thinks his lumber is the best is also the most money for lowe"s have nice treaded post at fair price but there lumber is out of line. i get most of my lumber from the amish people.

Other answers:
find the people who make the fence, not the dist. i just paid $62 a section, 6'h x 8'w, and $9 per post. the distributor in my area is selling the same fence made my the same people for $80 a section and $15 per post.
PS.. cedar last a lot longer, dont get spruce !

I have bought redwood from several suppliers in the Sacramento, California area. I swear, I got as good a price and as good a quality at Home Depot as anywhere else. Beside that they are close and I'm well known at the store so getting help is no problem.
I rebuilt our fence last year.
I checked the local lumber yards and found that lowes and Home Depot had the same material but at lower prices. They have a larger volume. I saved about $400 dollars by going to 6 inch pickets. I also saved another $200 dollars at lowes. There lumber is a little lower in price. So when you buy a large amount it adds up.
A note about the premade panels, total up the full length of your fence and you will see that the panels are not cheaper. The panels are more difficult to handle and you will see that they do not always fit right where you want them. Pull out the old post and put the new post back into the same hole. Rent a nail gun and compressor if you do not have them. This will make all the difference. Get a tractor jack from a tractor supply to pull the fence posts they cost about $30.Wrap a chain around the bottom of the post for the jack to hook to. The jack will cost twice as much at any other store.
Good Luck
