. Budget/Purpose/Code issues/Grade of the property or area surrounded by question/Type desired/Durability/Self install or contract the job.
Type is indeed an individuals choice, and dependant on code issues, as well as puprose, IE: Privacy/Security/Animal control, etc. It would also clear a difference in the purpose to use the appropriate type. Example: A 3 ft dignified very nice picket barrier might look pleasing, but might not contain an animal, or keep out intruders. Beyond that; stage might be in defilement of code issues? If goverened by a home owners association; chain join might be unacceptable? Costs scheduled here may not at all be a concern for you; and ebb and flow often; by location and availability.

You may want to 'ask permission" of your neighbors. Some inhabitants find it rude, but of course, it doesn't issue.
You should check local laws to see if you entail a permit or anything.
First, what is the barrier for? A privacy fence would be an 8 foot "Stockade" style surrounding your property. I would cost almost $35-$45 a panel plus about $15 a post. Gates are track more. A straight run chain join at 4 feet giant runs about $12 a foot installed. If you are surrounded by a rural setting, build a fence yourself but it's knotty work and will take you a season or two.
