Moss will not make your wood rot in that it is NOT a fungus... it doesnt "eat" away at your wood or anything.
On the other hand, moss DOES retain moisture... and THAT may cause your deck to rot (eventually) if it is not properly treated or stained.
In terms of getting rid of it, a pressure washer is the ideal solution, although getting rid of it chemically is pretty easy as well. Just spray it down with a diluted chlorine solution, or even cover it with black landscaper's material.
Like any other plant, moss dies without sunlight, water, or in the presence of things it doesnt like (such as chlorine). I'd rent the pressure washer though and be done with it same-day.
try a pressure washer. They work wonders on driveways and sidewalks. Check with the rental agency or dealer to be sure it can be used on the material that your deck is made from.
home depot has a product for this,pressure washer would help but elbow grease works well also
The moss or (algae) can be pressure-washed off from your deck, but the wood will probably be chipped from the pressure so you will probably need to repiant your deck after the scum is off. If you don't want to have to repaint your deck I would suggest using any kind of dish soap and a scrubbing brush and srub it off.
The guy that does my lawn uses bleach/water to kill the moss... it works great just lightly spray it over the area.... but you can also buy a moss killer at Home Depot...
