how do you frame a shed dormer?

If so, you have to first beef up the existing roof rafters. If they are 2X6's, you'll need to add AT LEAST two more to each side of where the dormer will be (they must be full length).. Check with your local building codes as they vary from place to place (snow load/safety reasons).

Install a header where the dormer roof will meet the existing roof.

Then you'll need to determine where the dormer walls will go, then remove the shingles and open the roof.

Erect the walls and shed roof. Shingle the new roof now.

Now, install flashing where the base of the new walls meet the old roof, then reshingle old roof.

Install window.

Next the siding goes on.
