air compressor troubleshooting?
Answers:
Sounds like to me you might not have it plugged into an adequate power source or plugged into too small of an extension cord. As a roofer I have ran into this problem due to the temporary pole being too far from the job and having to run extension cords. First, you should never run any electric air compressor thru an extension cord that is less than a 12 gauge cord. Second, it is always better to run more air hose than it is to run an extension cord to begin with. So check these areas and try again. If it still smokes and sparks it might be a defective motor on the compressor. Or it might be that you did not do one of the above suggestions to begin with and burnt the motor up on the compressor!

Sounds like something went wrong with the compressor which would also cause the motor to fail. On that model does the compressor require oil for lubrication and did you put any?
It would really really really help to know the make model and what the problem is that you are having!
